Yoga, A man’s perspective

These days it’s pretty much the norm for the numbers of men in yoga classes to be equalling the women. With mental heath a huge cultural topic of conversation at the moment; its great to see so many men recognising the benefits of yoga as a complete tool kit for health.

Did you know that many of the traditional yoga practices born in India were designed solely for men? .. it’s true. Luckily these days we have the input of gender equality as well as modern movement science to create a yoga practice that is functional & accessible for everybody. If you can’t touch your toes now, then your functional mobility could do with a bit of attention-unless you plan to walk around barefoot for ever?

And in case you don’t want to take just my word for it, I asked a couple of our members for their input. Both have been practising consistently for a while now, so here is their take on how yoga has impacted their lives;

Jonny (pictured) has been taking classes regularly now for 2 years. “Initially I started doing yoga as an addition to my normal gym/weights routine, but now the yoga takes the lead role in my lifestyle. When I started I had no idea that it would challenge by body & mind the way it has. The feeling during & after class of a clear mind & relaxed body keeps me coming week after week. Initially I was dubious about being a guy walking into my first ever class, but I soon realised it was completely normal in that environment. One of the things I enjoy most is the chance for progression in poses and the development of skills required. I never feel as though classes become boring because in the process of preparing the body, building up to different poses there is always something to learn. I like the fact that there are always options given to cater for what feels best for your body each day. Everyone’s practice is different so there is no pressure but always options to explore new things. I’m really looking forward to continuing my yoga journey at Mula.”
